just when I need something to remind me of life
of the unfettered lightness of happiness
versus the oppressive lead weight of depression
goldfinches arrive at my feeder
in their drab winter plumage
they are nothing like their bright yellow summer color--
not the eye candy I am used to--
yet they make my heart sing
remember spring
a goldfinch nest I once found in a tiny sapling
standing in a sea of cement
next to my mailbox
wild animals will make their homes
in the least likely of places
when forced to
just like i have no alternative here
to finish vet school
i must make my home in this grey, snowy place
but i remember being happy
and some of the lightness trickles back in
